Hi Marissa! Thank you so much for letting me crash your game last Sunday showing up unannounced! I apologize it has taken me all week to write this as well - Life....lol.
I loved your energy!!! You were involved in the game, keeping up with the play and having a good time! I was impressed that you halted the game when they started before you blew your whistle on the restart after a goal! Great job explaining to them that they have to wait for a whistle - this age is all about educating the young payers! You clearly are enjoying reffing and I'm so glad that you can find time in your busy schedule to ref! It's always good that we have positive female roll models like yourself, out there! |

Just a couple of things to keep in mind for future games ~ Keep an eye on the thrower during throw ins and blow your whistle when they lift their back foot or don't throw the ball form over their head. Let them know their mistake and allow them to retake the throw in. (If anything, it will give the coach something to work on in practice!). Subs are allowed at every stoppage - keep your head on a swivel and check for kids waiting at midfield (if they sub from their bench, kindly remind the coach to send them to midfield for subbing). Drop balls are no longer a contested event - the ball is now only dropped to one team. (Law 8.2 - ... In all other cases, the referee drops the ball for one player of the team that last touched the ball at the position where it last touched a player, an outside agent or, as outlined in Law 9.1, a match official) (https://www.theifab.com/laws/latest/the-start-and-restart-of-play/#introduction). Additionally, the ball is played from wherever it was and to whichever team had possession, if you stop play for an injury or any other reason that you blow your whistle to stop play that is not a foul. and lastly, no whistles after goals...unless you see the ball go over the line in its entirety and they continue to play - then you need to get their attention by blowing your whistle and pointing back to the center dot.
Thank you again for letting me watch your game. Please don't hesitate to reach out if you need anything!!!

Marissa is great!!!! She works for WPTZ/MyNBC5 and has previous reffing experience in MA from when she was 15. She came prepared to ref, enforced the rules, connected with the players and looked like she was having a good time. She was very receptive to feedback. I hope she sticks around!!!! She is a great roll model.
