Hey Emmett, It was great meeting you and watching you ref on Sunday! I want to commend you on showing up well prepared and ready to go! You were dressed professionally, shirt tucked in, socks pulled up and you had the essential equipment - whistle, watch, pencil, game card. The check in process went well - I liked that you apologized to the players if you mispronounce their name. I always like to review the game card before the game and check out the names to be prepared for check in. I thought your fitness and movement with the play was great - you obviously have the stamina to run up and down the field with the play and make the appropriate calls. Well done managing the substitutions as well! |
Areas for Development |
A few things that we spoke about at halftime were taking the whistle out of your mouth and instead wrapping it around your wrist. This will prevent you from blowing the whistle too early should a foul occur but advantage should be played. It also prevents you from blowing it in the even you trip! it happens! At the U10 level, combine your signals/mechanics with a verbal queue so the players have a visual and an auditory instruction (red throw/green throw/goal kick/corner kick). On thei field, work on getting closer to the far side of the field and closer to play in the corners. Sometimes it's hard to see the side line when the sun is glaring on it or when it hasn't been painted in a while. lastly, use your whistle as a tool - it's much louder than your voice and it's most effective to stop play when you blow it loudly! THe whistle may seem loud to you but don't forget that coaches and parents also need to hear the whistle. (a good example of sound is when you play a video on your phone. When it's close to your face, it's loud but if you drop your arm to your side and try to listen to the video, it's going to ba a lot quieter - it's similar to the whistle.). You're going to be ready for the noise, blow it loudly!
Keep up the great work! Reffing is fun! Every game is an opportunity to get better - even when you are an AR - watch the center ref and how they perform and talk to them! More than likely they have a few years of experience they're willing to share!

Comments to Bill / Assignors / SRC |
Emmett is a cool kid. He's a nordic player and when asked if he is having fun reffing, he nodded and said yes! He was very open to what I had to say and made corrections in the second half which he affirmed helped his performance. Being that he's only 14 he's good with the U10/12s for now. He did mention he also had an AR assignment later in the day so hopefully working with some experienced refs will help him continue to improve his own game. |
