Hey Nat! It was great meeting you yesterday (and your family too!). I love that they want to come watch you and show their support! You did very well yesterday! You arrived to the field with plenty of time and looked professional with your ref kit neatly tucked in and socks pulled up. With your experience with child psych, you understand that the players need to hear your vebal calls as well as being shown the hand/arm mechanics. You moved with the play effectively and tried to get in the right spot for the best view of the play. |

We spoke about some times to work on. Use your whistle to your advantage. Blow it loud! The Fox40 whistle takes some practice to use effectively. Also try to vary the tones of your whistle. Longer whistle to start the game/half or for a hard foul, shorter whistle for soft fouls or where you want to stop play (for example when the ball goes out of bounds but they try to keep playing it) or for subbing stops/starts. Try to get closer to the sidelines and the corners to have a better view of the play, especially when there could be a glare where seeing the touchline is tough. Make sure that the keeper is protected, especially when they're on the ground with the ball; don't allow the opposing team to kick the ball from their hands. We didn't talk about this last thing because I spaced but it helps to line up on the buildout line for goalkicks - you can talk to the players and remind them to retreat to the buildout line - sometimes they just forget retreat or are trying to gain an advantage. Lots of talking and interacting with the kids will help them learn the game and will make your job that much more fun!
Please feel free to reach out to me for anything!!!

Nat is great!!!! They are the brother-in-law to JoEllen Rowley so she has helped them get going with reffing including giving them her uniform! Nat is a child psychiatry resident (or something like that) and has a solid understanding about youth and adolescents. He really wants to succeed and was so appreciative of me coming to their game - even the family came out to watch. RIght now I think Nat is enjoying the U10/12 level. Oh, he's "older" (29) so he's responsible and dependable. I think this ref may stick around a while...fingers crossed!!!! |
