Positive Areas |
Evan demonstrated a strong understanding of the age-specific rules and Laws of the Game, and enforced them where needed during the match with appropriate whistle use, proper signaling and use of voice to clarify restarts for players or manage substitutions.
Evan had a professional appearance, communicated effectively with coaches and players, and demonstrated confidence in his role as the referee.
Evan was very receptive to feedback and was able to improve his performance from the first to the second half by following guidance on positioning and signaling! |
Areas for Development |
Positioning improved in the second half. Evan had previously been told to stay in the middle of the field. We discussed the need to have a good view of active play, which means moving closer to the corners. I recommend Evan review Section 1 of the IFAB Guidelines for Match Officials: Positioning, Movement and Teamwork (https://www.theifab.com/laws/latest/guidelines/positioning-movement-and-teamwork/#general-positioning-and-movement).
As part of a pregame, Evan should ensure that coaches from both teams understand the build-out line (for U10) and expectations for substitutions as well as adjust technical areas if necessary. When managing substitutions during the match, ensure players wait to enter the field until you have notified them that a substitution is allowed. |

Evan had great confidence and presence! He needs more practice with positioning, and was previously misled when told he should be staying in the center of the field only (apparently he had just been staying along one sideline when he was given this instruction), but he receives and adjusts to feedback very well! He has been an AR previously, and I think that he would benefit from further challenges via U12 matches and U14/16 AR positions.
I am unsure whether Jay is moving forward with the weekly quizzes/POI for referees this VSL season, but if he is, it would be great to send out some diagrams/visuals and/or videos to demonstrate appropriate positioning for small sided matches. The IFAB LOTG Guidance to Referees does not include direction on positioning for a solo-referee, to my knowledge. |
